Is Chevrolet readying a CNG-powered Impala?

When it comes to fleet vehicles, the Chevrolet Impala definitely plays an important role for General Motors, and it looks like GM is hard at work developing the next-gen Impala for bulk-buying businesses. The Motoring Journal recently spotted a handful of Impalas testing in Colorado with minor camouflage, but upon closer inspection, these appear to be test mules for a new compressed natural gas (CNG) model – a powertrain combination far more likely to find favor with fleet buyers than everyday consumers.

Aside from the obvious "CNG" stickers affixed to the decklid, these cars also have different exhaust outlets than what we saw on the V6-equipped Impalas during our first drive of the sedan back in March. Images also show under the hood with a different engine cover and plenty of exposed wiring as the CNG system continues testing. There was also an electrical connector poking out of the front fascia, and at least one of the sedans had a receiver-style trailer hitch.

During the launch of the 2014 Impala, Chevrolet said that it is looking to flip the current fleet-to-retail from 70:30 to a more profitable and resale-friendly 30:70 ratio, and this new CNG Impala could be a good way to retain some of that 30-percent fleet business. We reached out to GM for word on when a CNG Impala might arrive, and received this response:
"We do offer a CNG van and a bi-fuel pickup truck, but still studying the demand for CNG powered passenger cars. Infrastructure is a consideration for anyone buying these types of vehicles. Unfortunately, there's nothing to announce today on this front."
Our best guess is that it could debut for the 2015 model year, since the ninth-generation model is carrying over for fleet-only sales as the 2014 Impala Limited.

Check Coolant and Radiator

Cars are designed to run hot, but there's a limit to how hot they should run. A combustion engine is most efficient at around 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93 degrees Celsius). But if an engine is allowed to get too hot, moving metal parts can actually start to melt and fuse together, causing a variety of internal problems for your engine -- and, you guessed it, a hefty repair bill.

Luckily, all modern cars have an ingenious cooling system that uses a chemical coolant, called antifreeze, and a series of pumps, hoses, thermostats and fans to keep the car at its optimal running temperature. But any problems with this system -- low coolant levels, cracked hoses, loose or broken belts, a leak in the radiator or even a loose or missing radiator cap can cause your car to overheat and break down.

The summertime is tough on cooling systems. Sitting in traffic on a hot day is one of the quickest ways to overheat your car. This is because there's no air flowing across the engine to help keep it cool. A well-tuned cooling system can take long idles in hot weather, but if you have low coolant levels or a busted fan belt, your engine temperature is going to go up -- and fast.

Check under the hood and make sure that your coolant levels are fine. The general rule is to flush your radiator and add new coolant at least every two years. Flushing the radiator is done with a special chemical that cleans debris and build-up on the inside of the radiator. For summer driving, coolant should be added as a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water. You can even buy premixed coolant so you don't have to bother with the measurements.

If you see a small puddle of coolant under your car when it's been parked for a while, then you have a coolant leak. Take it to the service station as soon as you can to get your system checked out.

Spied: 2014 Chevrolet Colorado with Silverado Cues

2014 marks the return of the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon mid-size pickups to the United States market, but don’t think that the trucks will look exactly like their international-market counterparts. New spy shots of the truck show it sporting Silverado design cues.

The biggest similarity is the grille insert: the Chevrolet bowtie is mounted on a thick single horizontal bar, and the space above or below it has thin plastic latticework. It’s something we’ve already seen on trucks like the Silverado Z71. Keep in mind, however, that the headlights on this model are horizontal, not vertical–there’s only one level as opposed to the Silverado’s stacked layout. This is a big departure from the last model we saw (a crew cab), which used a more rounded front end that looked more like the international-market truck. This time around, the design looks closer to production, and a lot closer to the Silverado.

Towards the middle of the truck, there’s a little bit of international-market Chevrolet Colorado design, specifically, the uptick in the beltline at the rear window. Look really closely and you can see the sloping line towards the bottom of the door, which matches previous prototypes and the international-market truck.

It looks like the Chevrolet Colorado prototype you see here is both nearly finished and a close replica of the international-market one, albeit with a different front end. Expect the Colorado and Canyon to make use of four- and six-cylinder engines from GM’s parts bin, possibly including the 3.6-liter V-6 from the Equinox/Terrain, and either the 2.0-liter turbo I-4 or 2.5-liter naturally aspirated I-4 from the Malibu, or the 2.4-liter I-4 from the Equinox/Terrain.

We’ll see exactly which engine will go under that large hood soon: GM hopes to start production on the duo of trucks in Wentzville, Missouri this fall or winter.
